Look for accommodation

Like all students in Germany and France, students admitted to our Master are not automatically given a room. You have to look for accommodation by yourself. You may apply for a room in the student’s residence halls or look on the private market.
You may consider renting a room in the suburbs. There are usually more offers for a better price. It is fairly easy to commute between both universities, as they are located fairly close. There are good transportationnetworks enabling you to commute on a daily basis. (For example it takes 2:00 h on the train to get from Freiburg centre to Strasbourg centre and 1:15 h with bus or shared car).

Another possibility is to consult the CROUS data base for private room or the CROUS service for short term rent.

For all dormitories in Freiburg you can apply between January 15th and February 28th (summer semester) and from July 15th to August 31st (winter semester).
Residence halls are usually available from beginning of semester on (October or April). If you wish accommodation earlier, you should specify it on your application.

Some students living mostly in Germany, decide to live in the german small city Kehl, close to the French border, and commute in a few min. daily to Strasbourg from there. The Freiburg university students services (SWFR) maintains dormitories in Kehl too.

CAUTION: Fake private rental ads on the web: The easiest signs of a rental scam is when someone asks you to wire money via Western Union, Moneygram, or Prepaid Visa card or the owner is out of the country, the price is significantly lower than for similar ads, the message is full of spelling mistakes, etc. Scammers usually ask for a deposit or first month’s rent before you even see the room. Don’t fill out an application until you’ve seen the room or flat and never, under any circumstances, send money to anyone without securing a lease and confirming the property manager has legal right to rent the flat.
